How to Store Your Cake to Keep It Fresh and Flavorful

Some days your cake doesn’t make it past the first day...other times it may last for a week! Whatever happens, we want to make sure your Ally & Eloise cake is fresh and flavorful every time you take a bite. Keep reading to learn how to store your cake!

Do I Need to Refrigerate My Cake?

Not all cakes have to be refrigerated. In fact, many cakes will do great sitting on your countertop for a few days! However, some cakes will stay freshest if kept in the fridge. Store your cake in the fridge if it contains:

• Cream cheese frosting
  
• Mocha buttercream frosting
  
• Ganache
  
• Lemon curd
  
• Fresh fruit
  
• Any kind of custard
  

If your cake is frosted with the below icings, it can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge. These frostings include a lot of butter, so if you choose to store it in the refrigerator, make sure to take it out 2-3 hours before your event to allow the frosting to soften up before serving. 

• Swiss meringue buttercream
• American buttercream
• Chocolate buttercream

The frosting on your cake can become too soft if kept in a warm place. So if you decide to skip the fridge, make sure you store it in a cool place that isn’t in the sunlight.​

How Long Will My Cake Last?

Cakes stored out of the refrigerator should stay fresh for 4 to 5 days, and cakes stored in the fridge should stay fresh for 5 to 7 days. ​

Do I Need to Wrap My Cake?

If you haven’t cut into your cake yet, you don’t have to wrap the cake in plastic wrap. The frosting acts as a protective barrier and will help ensure the inside of your cake remains moist and tender. ​

How to Store Cut Cake

Once you cut your cake, it will likely lose some moisture and become dry. To keep your entire cake moist and tender, press a piece of plastic wrap onto the open side, directly against the cake.
